Different separation mechanisms
Filtration uses a porous barrier to retain material while liquid passes through; centrifugation accelerates separation according to the behaviour of phases in a rotating field. Neither term guarantees complete clarification. The target may be a clarified liquid, recovered solids or both, so the selection question must begin with the desired streams and their acceptance criteria.
Test a representative feed
Solids loading, particle size, viscosity and temperature can change separation performance. A laboratory clear sample does not prove stable operation over a full production campaign. Equipment vendors should evaluate representative feed and cleaning needs; brochure throughput without feed conditions is not a defensible guarantee for a botanical slurry.
Keep polishing distinct from primary separation
GEA describes decanters and polishing separators within extraction systems. This illustrates why staged separation may be useful, not a recommendation of a particular installation. Consider recovery, residual suspended material, product losses and cleaning verification together. ZL Botanicals makes no claim here about owning these machines or offering equipment engineering services.
Acceptance discussion
Agree how clarified-liquid quality and product recovery will be measured before discussing equipment capacity.
Membrane or centrifuge: define the desired output
Before asking which equipment is better, write down what must leave the liquid and what must remain. Is the target removal of coarse plant solids, fine dispersed matter, or a particular compositional fraction? Ask the equipment provider to distinguish the proposed mechanism and demonstrate it on representative feed. Do not treat a centrifuge speed, membrane pore rating or nominal molecular-weight cut-off as a guaranteed finished-extract specification.
Common-feed comparison checklist
Request trials on a documented common feed or justified comparable lots. Record feed solids, temperature, viscosity where relevant, previous clarification and sampling points. Compare the same desired product stream, not the clearest stream from each machine. Ask whether a staged route is worth evaluating instead of forcing an either-or choice before feed behavior is understood. These are evaluation questions, not a claim that any route is available at ZL.
Membrane trial questions
Ask for the membrane material, rating definition, solvent and cleaning compatibility, operating mode, measured product recovery and how performance changes over the run. Request evidence about fouling, cleaning and the composition of retained and passing streams for the proposed feed. A nominal cut-off is a selection input, not enough to prove removal of a named impurity. Keep a separately documented boundary for any microbiological or sterile-filtration claim.
Centrifuge and decision checklist
Ask the provider to report equipment geometry and operating conditions together with solids discharge, liquid clarity, product recovery and cleaning needs. Compare material balances and marker distribution in all relevant streams; do not equate reduced turbidity with purification. Set the acceptance decision against the intended downstream use, handling losses and repeatability. No universal rpm, membrane size, throughput or product-loss percentage is prescribed here.
